Traditional Chakalaka Recipe
Background
What's your favourite South African meal? Nothing beats the good old fashioned Chakalaka to complement a braai with pap. Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy, that is traditionally served with bread, pap, samp, stews or curries.
London based South African foodie, Sandile Rahube, recently shared his delicious Chakalaka recipe with Taste of Southern Africa. Chakalaka is easy and quick to prepare, and the perfect relish to add to any meal! Here's Sandile's recipe:
Ingredients
500g grated carrots
1 can of baked beans
1 red pepper, finely chopped
1 green pepper, finely chopped
3 Thai chillies, seeded & finely chopped
1 medium onion, diced
3 tbsp hot or mild curry powder
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp pepper
3 tbsp vegetable or olive oil
1 tsp garlic powder or fresh
1 tsp ginger powder or fresh
1 tsp paprika
Directions
1. Fry chillies, peppers & onions in the oil
2. Add ginger, paprika & garlic
3. Add curry powder of your choice
4. Add carrots and cook for 10 minutes
5. Add salt and pepper to taste, and add baked beans and cook for 5 minutes
6. Serve hot or cold
